You just got your training module back from an AI tool. The quiz is done. Ten questions, all formatted perfectly. You're ahead of schedule and under budget.
Then you actually read the questions.
"Which core principle states 'Never compromise safety for convenience'?" A. Safety First ✅ B. Empathy & Patience C. Clarity & Communication D. Efficiency
The answer is literally in the question. An 8-year-old could pass this quiz without taking the training. 🤦♀️

Why AI Writes Obvious Questions
AI doesn't understand learning. It understands patterns.
Feed it training content and ask for quiz questions, and it looks for keywords. It finds "Safety First" and "never compromise safety" in the same section. Perfect match. Question generated. ✓
What AI can't do: recognize the answer shouldn't echo the question, create plausible wrong answers, or assess whether learners actually understood anything.
AI treats quiz writing like keyword matching. That's not how assessment works. 📚
Three Signs Your Quiz Was AI-Written
1. The answer is in the question
"What is the first step in conflict resolution?" A. Listen ✅ B. Empathize C. Problem-solve D. Follow up
There's no cognitive work here. You're testing reading ability, not understanding.
Compare that to: "A customer is upset about a delayed order. What should you do first?" A. Explain the delay reasons B. Ask questions to understand their concern ✅ C. Offer a discount immediately D. Transfer them to your supervisor
Now you're testing whether they know what listening looks like in practice. 🎯
2. Wrong answers are obviously wrong
"Which communication style is most effective in conflict?" A. Aggressive B. Assertive ✅ C. Passive D. Silent treatment
Anyone can eliminate "aggressive" and "silent treatment" without knowing anything about communication styles.
Compare that to: "Which communication style is most effective in conflict?" A. Direct and firm ✅ B. Accommodating and flexible C. Collaborative and compromising D. Cautious and diplomatic
Now the wrong answers are plausible. You have to actually understand communication styles to choose correctly.
3. Questions test memorization instead of application
"What does SMART stand for?" A. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound ✅
This tells you nothing about whether someone can write effective goals.
Compare that to: "Which goal follows the SMART framework?" A. "Improve customer satisfaction" B. "Increase response time by 20% within Q2" ✅ C. "Work harder on quality" D. "Do better next quarter"
Now you're testing whether they can recognize a well-written goal, not whether they memorized an acronym. 💡
How to Actually Use AI for Quiz Questions
Ask AI for scenario-based questions, not definitions:
"Create a quiz question with a realistic workplace situation and ask what the learner should do. Include plausible wrong answers that seem reasonable."
Then fix what it gives you. Rewrite obvious answers, strengthen weak distractors, and make sure scenarios feel realistic.
AI creates raw material. You turn it into actual assessment. 🛠️
What Good Assessment Requires
Scenario-based questions that test application in realistic situations.
Plausible distractors where wrong answers seem reasonable if you don't fully understand the concept.
Application over recall. Don't ask what something IS. Ask what someone should DO with it.

That requires an instructional designer who understands the difference between testing recall and testing understanding—and who knows how to build questions that separate people who learned from people who just clicked through.
